At CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences, we apply mathematics and statistics to answer important questions from medical research to environmental monitoring and industrial processing.

On December 4-6 a CSIRO workshop will be held in Melbourne to address the ‘Simulation and Modelling of Urban and Regional Sustainability, Transitions and Applications in Policy, Planning and Management’ (SMURT).  It will be a forum  to exchange knowledge on regional and urban transition simulations for policy development, planning and management.

A novel program that models the behaviour of rocks within crushing and grinding mills is helping to improve energy efficiency and could accelerate the development of new comminution machinery.

CSIRO is using the virtual world, Second Life, to communicate its scientific work to an international audience.

Modelling air turbulence, understanding cooling processes, simulating pressure changes – these are just some of the applications of CSIRO’s Fastflo software.

SIMEDWin is a reservoir simulator that is used for the simulation of coal seam methane production, coalmine gas drainage and enhanced coal seam methane production.

The Water Research Observation Network (WRON) Visualisation Centre provides an environment for the investigation and development of visualisation tools and interfaces that display information in an engaging and easily understood manner as shown in this video. (2:27)

Dr Luke Connell is the stream leader for field development and processing and the team leader for coal seam reservoirs. His research includes reservoir simulation and characterisation of coal seam gas reservoirs.

Virtual environment and 3D simulations, multi-agent models and facilities management are key aspects of Dr Ding’s research on improving the built environment.

The ICT Centre has a range of information and communication technologies available for commercialisation.
