Climate Change

Providing comprehensive, rigorous science to help Australia understand, respond to and plan for a changing climate.

Preparing for the Impacts of Climate Change

By understanding the potential impacts of climate change, and identifying ways to adapt, Australia can reduce the economic and social cost to communities, seize emerging opportunites and become a more sustainable society.

Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Many of the impacts of climate change can be reduced, delayed or avoided by reducing green house gas emissions, generate clean energy and store more carbon in the landscape.

Understanding our Changing Climate

Understanding the Earth's climate system is the first step in tackling climate change. CSIRO monitors our climate and oceans, studies the influence of greenhouse gases, and produces official climate change projections for Australia.

Climate change poses an urgent threat to Australia and the world. Understanding the climate system and how it is changing now and in the future will enable us to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while preparing for the unavoidable impacts of climate change on our health, infrastructure, environment and economy.

A comprehensive response to climate change requires three broad areas of action and research:

  • understanding and projecting the earth’s climate system
  • reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • preparing for climate impacts that are now unavoidable.

CSIRO is responding to the climate change challenge.

As Australia’s largest research organisation, CSIRO is delivering the full spectrum of research required for Australia to respond to and plan for climate change.
